Boston icons 2 release
H3110 W0r1D! After a lot of months, new Boston release is here again! Version 2 is finally out.
Due to the latest design changes on GNOME — mostly thanks to libadwaita — was important to make deep revisions. GNOME 42 UI is flatter, even more minimal incorporating soft lines, and Boston needed to adapt it to be consistent and improve cohesion.
Main changes are focused to incorporate smooth lines in high-level hierarchical icons, such as folders. Now those pieces has a better look embracing some curves that improve their use with Adwaita theme. Some important features can be seen at a glance: Gzip and Snap packages support, GIF and RAW images, VDI and VBOX support, new eBook, new audio file, new video file, new Audacity icon, CBR comic files, XPI themes (for Firefox) and shy improvements for Flatpak. Symbolics was revised too.
A couple of legacy icons has removed, and this probably will continue in future releases if everything is ok. This decision was taken because Adwaita begins to replace them with symbolics. Those pieces was used for GTK2 and Qt apps, as well as others which don’t use monchrome look. Now with Adwaita forcing them to change, they are becoming expendable leading to more comfortable maintenance. However, this means that non GNOME desktops support could be affected as it’s quite dependent on these elements. Some old GNOME/GTK software are affected too and it should be assessed if decision has been correct before erase all these pieces.
By other hand, I know exists some troubles with Flatpak apps since time ago, which makes difficult to fully implement custom icon themes. Flatpak is an interesting way to share apps, and some distros use it as important software manager for the OS (like Fedora or GNOME project in itself). So, Flatpak limitations for user and interface customization should be considered as external “problems”, with pros and cons about the homogeneus look using other themes. This will always be a difficulty until a solution is found.
As always, signature check files can be obtained here and you can read the entire Changelog file for more details.
